The story
Santiago Ramón y Cajal looked through a microscope and drew a forest. Using and refining a silver staining method developed by Camillo Golgi, he made nerve cells appear dark against a pale field. His thousands of careful drawings showed branching forms that could look like trees, roots, or constellations. Cajal argued that the nervous system was made of separate cells, later called neurons, rather than one continuous web. Golgi disagreed, even when the two scientists shared the Nobel Prize. That disagreement is part of the beauty: the same stained tissue could support rival visions until evidence accumulated. Ramon is the unaccented page form; Ramón is Spanish and Catalan, related to Raymond and ultimately to Germanic elements for counsel and protection. Cajal's surname does not define the given name's root. It gives Ramon a remarkable association with observation, pen and paper, and a forest discovered inside the body.
