Meaning

gates of paradise (a name spelled to crossover smoothly with the Western name Ryan)

The story

Rayan is an Arabic name, an alternate spelling of Rayyan, meaning watered, luxuriant, and it carries one of the gentlest images in Islamic tradition: Ar-Rayyan is the gate of Paradise reserved for those who fast, named, the commentators explain, because it quenches thirst. A name that promises water to the thirsty. France adopted it wholeheartedly, and it ranked 49th there in 2020. The American record shows the same arrival: 1,444 boys in the 2000s, 4,216 in the 2010s. Brazil counted 6,005 in 2022 with a median age of fifteen. The references list it for boys and girls alike. In the American and Brazilian datasets cited here, the boys' and men's columns are larger. A small word for abundance that three continents have found room for.
