Meaning
from the Rhondda Valley of Wales; also a Spanish city name; famously borne by Ronda Rousey
The story
Ronda is a name drawn from places: the Rhondda Valley of Wales, coal country of song and story, and the ancient clifftop city of Ronda in southern Spain. As an American baby name it had its moment at mid-century, riding the same wave of sounds that made Linda, Brenda and Rhonda fixtures of postwar nurseries, then fading as those rhythms went out of fashion. Decades later, one bearer gave the name an edge nobody saw coming. Ronda Rousey won an Olympic bronze medal in judo, became the first women's champion in UFC history, and through sheer drawing power forced open a sport that had flatly refused to include women, before adding a run as a professional wrestling headliner. The name has stayed quiet on the charts since its postwar heyday, but it no longer reads as merely retro. Ronda now carries a fighter's afterglow.
