The story
Rowan has two histories that meet by coincidence around red. One begins with Irish Ruadhán, a name formed from rúad, red, with a diminutive suffix. A bearer of that older name founded the monastery of Lorrha, giving the personal-name route a place in early Irish history. The other route begins not with a person but a tree. English rowan names a small European tree whose berries are orange-red. The shared color makes the two paths feel neatly joined, but they remain distinct: Rowan can be an Anglicized Irish name, or it can be a direct reference to the tree. That distinction is the interesting turn. A monastery founder and a berry-laden branch arrive at the same modern spelling from different directions, each carrying its own shade of red. No folklore is needed to make the meeting memorable; the coincidence is already the story.
