Rowan
Meaning
little redhead; rowan tree
The story
Rowan carries two routes that meet on the same sound. In Irish use it is an Anglicized form of Ruadhán, built from a word for red and often understood as little red one. In modern English it can also point to the rowan tree. The tree word came from Old Norse and, by coincidence, shares the same distant Indo-European root associated with red. Those histories are related only far back, so a family's intention still matters. The US curve is decisively modern. Rowan barely registers through most of the twentieth century, begins to rise in the 2000s, climbs sharply in the 2010s, and reaches its highest point in the 2020s. It is now used for both boys and girls. Rowan's appeal is not one tidy meaning but a rare overlap: an Irish personal name, a surname route, and a vivid tree name all reinforcing the same simple spelling.
