Meaning

short form of Alessandro, defender of men (alexein 'to defend' + andros 'man')

The story

Sandro is what Alessandro becomes when a household actually uses it, and Italy's most famous example made it official: the painter of The Birth of Venus entered the record as Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, yet a document from 1470 already calls him Sandro Mariano Botticelli, the short form fully adopted. The surname, incidentally, means "little barrel," inherited, apparently, from a brother nicknamed Botticello for his round build. Genius keeps humble paperwork. Behind the short form stands Alexander's old Greek meaning, defending men, and a second homeland: Georgian families clip Aleksandre the same way. The record has a nice symmetry: the 1970s put 434 boys in the American register and 48,887 in Brazil's, where the 2022 census counts 113,102 residents with a median age of 43. Botticelli would recognize the arrangement: the formal name on the document, Sandro doing the daily work.
