Meaning
completely victorious, triumphant; modern form of Sanjaya
The story
Sanjay is the modern form of Sanjaya, a Sanskrit name glossed completely victorious or triumphant. Yet the Sanjaya who gives the name its great literary scene is not charging across the battlefield. The Bhagavad Gita opens with the blind king Dhritarashtra asking him what happened at Kurukshetra. Sanjaya becomes the witness and teller, reporting the exchange between Krishna and Arjuna. Near the work's close, one translation has him say that through Vyasa's favor he heard the secret while Krishna was speaking. The name's victory meaning and the character's role should not be forced into a moral about personality. What lasts is the unusual point of view: an epic battlefield reaches its listener through a man whose work is to hear and recount. Modern Sanjay drops Sanjaya's final vowel, but the form relationship remains. A triumphant name arrives through the voice of an observer.

Not on 9 other recordsWhy
- Not on the record in Mexico City, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Ireland, New Zealand and Poland: those registries withhold small counts, so rare uses may sit below their floors.
- Not on the Chile record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 5 registrations in some year, so rarer uses are not shown.
- Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years.
- Not on Norway’s list: Statistics Norway lists only first names carried by 200 or more living people, so rarer names are not shown.
