Meaning

“Italian and Spanish for holy or saint, from Latin sanctus; often given to boys born near a saint's feast day”

The story

Santo means saint in Italian, straight from the Latin sanctus, and its bearers have treated the job description loosely. Santo Farina, of the Brooklyn duo Santo and Johnny, sent the steel-guitar instrumental Sleep Walk to number one for two weeks in September 1959. In Mexico the name belongs to a mask: Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta wrestled as El Santo, a ring name rather than a birth name, made at least 53 films between 1958 and 1982, and was buried, as he wished, wearing the silver mask. The American record tells an immigration story: 953 boys in the 1920s, a slow fade to 154 in the 2010s, then a flicker, 188 so far this decade, already past the full decade before it. Brazil's census counted 6,134, median age 66. Some names retire quietly; this one may be negotiating a comeback.
