The story

Skye is a bright, airy name drawn from the Isle of Skye, the largest and most dramatic of Scotland's Inner Hebrides, a place of misty mountains and sea cliffs whose old Norse name is often read as cloud island. The spelling with an e ties it firmly to that Scottish island rather than only to the open sky, though it happily carries both, earth and air at once. It belongs to the family of short, elemental nature names like Sky, Wren and Sage that modern parents love, and it works gracefully for a girl or a boy. In the United States Skye was most common in the 2010s and remains a steady favorite. Free, open and a little wild, Skye hands a child a rugged Scottish island and the whole sky above it in a single clear syllable.
