The story
Sri begins with a Sanskrit word for radiance, beauty, prosperity, and dignity. Across South Asia it also functions as a title of respect placed before a name, and it is associated with the goddess Lakshmi as Shri. In Telugu and Tamil naming, Sri can stand alone or begin longer names; in Indonesia the related form is familiar too. Those uses overlap, but they are not identical, and a family's language and tradition determine which one matters. The US chart shows only a recent trace, far below the level needed for a meaningful popularity curve. That makes Sri a good example of what American baby-name data misses: a name may be deeply recognizable across several cultures while remaining statistically tiny in one national dataset. One syllable can act as a complete given name, an honorific, or the bright opening of a compound name.
