Meaning
the season itself, from the Old English sumor; taken up as a name in the 1970s nature wave beside Autumn and Dawn, and warmed back up in the 2000s. Sunny by definition, casual by nature
The story
Some names are borrowed from saints or kings; Summer is borrowed from the calendar. It is simply the English season name turned into a girl's name, and for the first half of the twentieth century almost nobody made that turn: the name is essentially missing from the early American records. It flickered to life in the 1950s, then rose in earnest through the 1970s with the same wave of warm nature names, Dawn, Amber, Autumn, that the decade loved. Rather than fading when that fashion did, Summer kept climbing, helped along perhaps by sunny screen characters like Summer Roberts of The O.C., and it has held near its high point for the past two decades. It offers something few names can: a meaning every single person already knows, and nearly everyone feels good about.
