Sundar comes from Sanskrit sundara, an adjective for beautiful, handsome, lovely, charming, or agreeable. The word also appears in the title Sundara Kanda, the beautiful section traditionally counted as the fifth book of the Ramayana. That literary title is a cultural neighbor, not evidence that every person named Sundar was named for the epic. A modern bearer brings the page into another register. In 2019 Alphabet announced that Sundar Pichai, already Google's chief executive, would become chief executive of both Google and Alphabet. The appointment does not grow out of his name's meaning, and the meaning is not a verdict on the man.
