vocabulary word 'true', a virtue name

The story

True was an English word long before it became a modern given name. Its Old English ancestor carried the senses loyal and faithful, ideas of holding steady to a person, promise, or fact. Sojourner Truth turned that everyday word into a public declaration. Born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree, she chose her new name in eighteen forty-three when she set out to travel and preach against slavery. Sojourner described the road; Truth named the message. Her choice did not create the word or the modern baby name, and a child called True is not being assigned her biography. The connection matters for a different reason. It shows what self-naming can do when each part is chosen to state an intention. Most names arrive from family. Hers announced a direction she had claimed for herself. True still works as a compact virtue name, but this history gives the virtue footsteps, a voice, and a destination.
