The story
Uxío is Eugene with a Galician passport, from the Greek eugenes, well-born, and it is impossible to say the name without telling a language's story. Its great bearer was born Eugenio Novo Neira in 1930, and in a Spain that from 1938 allowed only Spanish name-forms for its newborns, he chose to publish as Uxío Novoneyra: poet of the Courel mountains, author of Os Eidos in 1955. Galicia's answer was formal. The Real Academia Galega dedicated the Día das Letras Galegas to him in 2010, the May 17 literary holiday the region has kept since 1963. The name hardly exists in the American record, and in Galicia it reads the opposite of obscure: it reads like a flag. Well-born, says the Greek. Reborn, the Galician might answer.
