Meaning

occupational surname, "one who fulls cloth"

The story

Walker is a job nobody has anymore. A walker, also called a fuller, trampled newly woven wool in water and earth to thicken and clean it, and the surname stuck to the families who did it. The work vanished with industrial mills. The name did not. In US records Walker held a quiet line for a century, between about 250 and 1,100 babies a decade from the 1890s through the 1980s, the pattern of a surname used sparingly up front. Then the surname-as-first-name habit became a wave: about 6,500 in the 2000s and nearly 22,000 so far this decade. What families choose now is the sound and the shape, not the trade, which is the ordinary fate of occupational names. Still, it is worth knowing that the original Walker spent his working life barefoot in a tub of wet cloth.
