Meaning

German cognate of William ("will helmet"); famously borne by Wilhelm Röntgen, physicist who discovered X-rays and won the first Nobel Prize in Physics

The story

Wilhelm is the German cognate of William, will and helmet in the old elements, a name of emperors and composers. Science remembers Wilhelm Röntgen, the physicist who in 1895 noticed a mysterious glow in his darkened laboratory, realized he had found rays that pass through flesh to photograph bone, named them X-rays for their unknown nature, and in 1901 received the very first Nobel Prize in Physics, declining on principle to patent the discovery. American records tell a sharper story: Wilhelm appears in the 1890s and 1900s, then fades from the chart just as a Kaiser named Wilhelm led Germany into the First World War and German names became a hard sell; we cannot prove the connection, but the timing is hard to ignore. Only in the 2020s does a flicker return, leaving Wilhelm feeling like a recovered heirloom: grand, Old World, newly wearable.
