The story
Yago is the old Spanish form of James, and the easiest way to see it is inside another name: Santiago is Sant Yago, Saint James, fused into one word, and Yago is what remains when the sainthood is unwrapped. The references route it through the Latin Iacobus back to the Hebrew Yaakov. Spain kept it quietly alive: the long jumper who thrilled Spanish athletics at the turn of the millennium was legally Santiago Lamela, competing and remembered as Yago. Then Brazil picked the name up at scale: 477 born in the 1980s became 12,681 in the 1990s and 20,300 in the 2010s, for 59,149 in the 2022 census with a median age of fourteen, and handed it to Yago Dora, the professional surfer on the world tour. A name that spent centuries hidden inside Santiago and is now out on its own, mostly speaking Portuguese.
