Meaning

meaning uncertain, possibly linked to a medieval Italian saint; famously borne by Empress Zita, last Empress consort of Austria-Hungary

The story

Zita is a small name with an uncertain origin: some trace it to an old Tuscan word for a young girl, and its history is bound up with a thirteenth-century Italian saint, Zita of Lucca, a serving girl remembered for her patience and generosity who became the patron of domestic workers. Centuries later the name reached a throne. Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma married the future Charles I of Austria in 1911 and became the last empress of Austria-Hungary, reigning barely two years before the empire dissolved, then living out a long, dignified exile that lasted until her death in 1989. In American records Zita has kept the quietest of footholds for more than a century, present in every decade but never common. That steadiness is its charm: a two-syllable rarity with a saint and an empress already in the family album.
