The story

Albert carries one of the deepest records on this site: about 94,000 American boys in the 1920s alone, and more than 477,000 across our fourteen decades. The name is Germanic Adalbert, noble and bright, from adal, noble, and beraht, bright, carried to England by the Normans and revived to enormous Victorian life by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband. Its most famous modern bearer needs no introduction: Albert Einstein. After midcentury the name eased decade by decade, down to about 6,900 boys in the 2010s, and about 2,900 have arrived so far this decade, alongside a small girls' line that faded generations ago. It reads today the way Arthur and Theodore read a decade ago: a grandfather name one turn away from a full return.
