Meaning

variant of Amelia, from a Germanic root traditionally translated as 'work' or 'industrious'

The story

Amalia rises from the Germanic root amal, meaning work, the same stem that shaped Amelia, and it has spent centuries in the palaces of Europe. Greece's first queen was Amalia of Oldenburg, who arrived in 1837, planted the gardens that became the National Garden of Athens, and set a national fashion with the folk-inspired court dress that still carries her name. Today the name looks forward instead: Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, born in 2003, is heir to the Dutch throne and expected to reign one day as the Netherlands' queen. In American records Amalia stayed faint for most of the last century, then began climbing around the turn of the millennium, right alongside the broad revival of Amelia and her cousins, and its strongest decades are the most recent ones. It is royal history that happens to be peaking now.
