US birth records, 1890 to 2025
Familiar but never popular
The complaint about every name list is that it holds the same names over and over. Here is the opposite: 487 names that stayed between 300 and 8,000 US births in every single decade from the 1950s to the 2020s. Everyone knows them and few children get them: Blair, Daphne and Stevie are three. The figures are US Social Security birth records.

How this list is made
A name is on this page when every decade from the 1950s to the 2020s sits between 300 and 8,000 US births. Each list is ordered by the 2020s count, and a name is listed under girls or boys by whichever of the two 2020s counts is larger.
One caution about the 2020s: here they cover 2020 to 2025, six years rather than ten, because that is as far as the record goes.
These are United States figures. The Social Security Administration publishes the names given to babies born in each year, and it holds back any name given to fewer than five babies of one sex in a year, so a name can be missing from a year without having gone unused.
The cut-offs on this page are ours, not the agency’s.
Only names that have a page here are listed, so every name on this page opens onto its full record.
