Meaning

occupational surname, "bowman"

The story

Archer was a job before it was a surname and a surname long before it was a first name. The bowman held a particular place in medieval England, where the longbow was closer to a national institution than a hobby, and families took the work as their name. As a given name it barely existed for most of the twentieth century: US records show never more than about 220 babies a decade from the 1890s through the 1980s, bottoming out at 17 in the 1980s. Then it moves. About 1,200 in the 2000s, 11,700 in the 2010s, and nearly 18,000 so far this decade. Archer belongs to the same wave that carried Hunter, Fletcher and Walker, all of them trades, all of them now chosen for sound rather than occupation. It also has an obvious short form, Arch, that almost nobody actually uses.
