The story
Ariana’s myth has a ship leaving in one direction and a god leaping in the other. The name is a Portuguese form of Ariadne, the Greek princess whose story Titian painted in Bacchus and Ariadne. Theseus has abandoned her on Naxos; his ship is disappearing as Bacchus springs from his chariot toward her. Above her head sits a crown of stars, a glimpse of the future the painting gives her. In one version of the myth, Bacchus throws her wedding crown into the sky. Ariadne is traditionally interpreted as most holy, although its earliest origin is uncertain. Ariana carries that old name in a Portuguese form, with modern English use as well. The painting offers something a meaning alone cannot: a life caught between the departure that hurt and a future already entering the frame.
