The story
Most of the music is gone, but Arianna’s lament survives. It is the remaining musical fragment of Monteverdi’s Arianna of 1608, an opera with a libretto by Rinuccini. The heroine comes from Greek myth: Ariadne helps Theseus escape the Minotaur’s labyrinth, then finds herself abandoned on Naxos. The lament gives her grief a voice. Arianna is the Italian form of Ariadne, whose meaning is less certain than its familiar story. One explanation reads it as most holy, from Greek and Cretan elements; other scholars reject that account and suggest an origin older than Greek. The name keeps both a disputed beginning and an extraordinary musical afterlife. A heroine left behind within the story became the voice preserved when nearly all the surrounding music was lost.
