Meaning

Italian and Spanish form of Arthur, of unknown meaning, possibly Celtic artos "bear"

The story

Arturo is the Italian and Spanish form of Arthur, and Arthur is a mystery the sources refuse to solve: possibly the Celtic artos, "bear", joined with wiros, "man", or rixs, "king", possibly the Roman family name Artorius. What is certain is the king, the sixth-century Briton of legend, first glimpsed in early Welsh poems. Arturo has carried that legend through American records every decade since the 1890s, climbing to about 10,300 boys in the 1990s and about 9,900 in the 2000s, with about 2,800 so far this decade. Brazil's census keeps a steady small line of its own. A possible bear, a possible king, a certain Round Table: Arturo is the version with the vowels open and the armor lighter, and it has never once left the American books.
