Meaning

traditionally "halo, moonlight"

The story

Ayla is Turkish, from ay, moon, and it is traditionally read as halo or moonlight, the ring of light around the moon rather than the moon itself. It is also close enough to the Hebrew Ayala, a doe, that some families arrive by that road instead. The American curve has one of the sharpest hinges in our data. Ayla appears in US records at a handful of babies a decade through the 1970s, and then jumps to about 1,050 in the 1980s. Jean M. Auel published The Clan of the Cave Bear, whose heroine is an Ayla, in 1980. Decade buckets cannot prove a cause and we are not going to claim one, but the coincidence sits exactly on the hinge. From there it climbs steadily: 5,600 in the 2000s, and more than 16,000 so far this decade.
