Beyoncé began as a family treasure: Tina Knowles's maiden name was Beyincé, from her Louisiana Creole family, and she passed a version of it to her first daughter as a given name. That daughter turned it into one of the most famous words in modern music, from Destiny's Child through a solo career, Crazy in Love to Lemonade, that has gathered more Grammy wins than any artist in history. A small number of American girls received the name in the 1990s and 2000s, just as she rose from Houston stages to global fame; we cannot prove the connection, but the timing is hard to ignore. Since then it has nearly vanished from the records again, perhaps because the name now belongs so completely to one woman that most parents simply leave it to her.
