Meaning

"pipe player," an occupational surname from the medieval bagpiper and flute player; almost unheard of as a first name before the 1990s, then a spirited favorite of the musical-surname wave. Bright, brisk, and impossible to slow down

The story

Piper started out as a job: the medieval English surname for someone who played the pipes, the musician who led the village dance. As a given name it was virtually unknown in America until midcentury, when the actress Piper Laurie, who took the name as a Hollywood invention around 1950, put it on movie posters; the first traces in the records appear right around then. It stayed a whisper for decades, then found its moment: the name climbed sharply through the 2000s and peaked in the 2010s, years in which television offered one memorable Piper after another, from Charmed to Orange Is the New Black. It has settled only slightly since. Bright, brisk and musical in the most literal way, Piper wears its meaning openly, a name that sounds like exactly what it is.
