Blanche
Meaning
white, fair; immortalized by Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
The story
Blanche is Old French for white or fair, a medieval compliment worn early by royalty: Blanche of Castile ruled France as regent and raised the son who became Saint Louis. Victorian Americans adored it, and the name enters the US records at its very peak, riding high through the 1890s and 1900s before descending decade by decade in one of the longest, slowest fades on any chart. By the time Tennessee Williams gave it to Blanche DuBois, the faded Southern belle of A Streetcar Named Desire, unforgettable in Vivien Leigh's Oscar-winning 1951 performance, the name was already past its prime, and the character's fragile gentility fixed it in memory as something beautiful and bygone. Today Blanche rests near the bottom of the chart, a true vintage piece, waiting to see whether the revival that rescued its Edwardian sisters will one day come calling.
