The story
Bridget is the English form of Irish Brigid, a name connected with the idea of being exalted. Its Irish story is layered. Brigid belongs to pre-Christian tradition as a goddess, and Saint Brigid belongs to Christian tradition as the founder associated with Kildare. Later memory brings the two close, but honesty does not turn them into one uncomplicated biography. The objects help keep the layers visible. A perpetual flame was remembered at Kildare, while Saint Brigid's crosses are woven from rushes into a small four-armed shape that can be made by hand each year. Those practices gave an old name heat and texture beyond a dictionary meaning. Modern Bridget travels in many spellings and does not require religious belief or Irish ancestry. Still, the inherited images are worth knowing: green reeds bent at the center, a guarded flame, and traditions meeting without fully surrendering their separate histories.
