The story
Gwendolyn comes from Welsh, joining gwen, white, fair, or blessed, with dolen, a ring, so it reads beautifully as white ring or blessed ring. It has a legendary past: in Geoffrey of Monmouth's medieval history, Gwendolen is an ancient queen of the Britons who defeats her former husband in battle and rules in her own right. The poet Gwendolyn Brooks made the name American and luminous, the first Black writer to win the Pulitzer Prize. It carries a soft strength and an unusually rich set of nicknames, from the crisp Gwen to Wendy, the pet form that spread alongside Peter Pan. In the United States Gwendolyn was a mid-century favorite and reads as current again now, riding the return of ornate vintage names. Melodic, storied and a little regal, Gwendolyn hands a child a warrior queen, a great poet and a blessing in its very meaning.

Not on the record in Puerto Rico and Poland: those registries withhold small counts, so rare uses may sit below their floors.
Not on the Chile record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 5 registrations in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years.
