The story

Casimir is the grand old name of Polish kings, a Slavic compound traditionally read as proclaimer of peace. Four Casimirs ruled Poland, and the greatest, Casimir III, was remembered as the king who found a Poland of wood and left one of brick, founding at Krakow in 1364 one of Europe's oldest universities. There is a gentler Casimir too: the fifteenth-century prince who preferred prayer to power and became Saint Casimir, patron saint of Poland and Lithuania. Polish families carried the name across the Atlantic, and it has remained an old, quiet presence in American records ever since, kept alive in Polish American households and lately stirring again as parents rediscover vintage continental names with easy nicknames: Caz, Cass, Kaz. Its meaning does half the work; few names promise peace so confidently.
