Meaning

used by C. S. Lewis for the Narnia prince (1950); probably from the Caspian Sea, named for the city of Qazvin and the ancient Cas tribe

The story

Caspian was used by C. S. Lewis for a character first appearing in 1950 in his Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the rightful king of Narnia driven into exile by his evil uncle Miraz. Behind the Name traces the name itself with a hedge at every step: Lewis probably based it on the Caspian Sea, which was named for the city of Qazvin, which was itself named for the ancient Cas tribe. The published American record waited four decades after the book: about 19 boys in the 1990s, about 190 in the 2000s, about 1,400 in the 2010s, and about 2,570 so far this decade, already past the whole 2010s total. A sea, a city, an ancient tribe, and an exiled king: the chain is long, and the record is finally reading it.
