The story
Connor is the English-world spelling of Irish Conor, itself descended from the old royal name Conchobar. The double-n form follows the familiar surname spelling; in Ireland, Conor remains the usual first-name form. That small spelling difference records a larger journey, from medieval Irish legend and kingship into the modern diaspora. In American records Connor is nearly absent until the late twentieth century. It appears in the 1980s, rises sharply through the 1990s, reaches its strongest decade in the 2000s, and then gradually cools. The curve is the shape of an Irish name becoming fully American without losing the sound of home. Connor now feels familiar enough that its older layers can be easy to miss, but they are still there: a streamlined spelling carrying one of the oldest names in Irish story.
