Meaning

fate, destiny

The story

Destiny began as an English vocabulary name, a direct borrowing of the word for fate. The word itself reaches back through French to Latin destinare, to determine or make firm. As a given name, however, Destiny is young. It entered broad English-language use only in the second half of the twentieth century, part of the same openness that brought more virtue words and expressive nouns onto birth certificates. The US curve captures that compact life clearly. Destiny is nearly absent before the 1980s, climbs fast in the 1990s, stays at its high point through the 2000s, and then eases in the 2010s and 2020s. That shape makes it a recognizable name of one era without reducing it to a fad. Parents did not invent a flattering hidden root for Destiny. They chose the plain modern word and all the possibility it already carried.
