Dominique
Meaning
“French form of Dominic, from Latin 'dominicus', meaning 'of the Lord'”
The story
Dominique is the French form of Dominic, from Latin dominicus, of the Lord, and France has long worn it for both sons and daughters, which gave it a head start when American name fashion went looking for elegant flexibility. Its record tells an honest story about fame: The Singing Nun's Dominique spent four weeks at number one in December 1963, and the curve barely moved, idling at trace levels through that entire decade. The real climb came a generation later, through the 1980s to a 1990s peak, alongside the name's growing presence in Black American naming and its gender-crossing French polish. It has eased since. Some names are launched by a song; Dominique politely declined the launch, waited twenty years, and then launched itself.
