Eusebio
Meaning
pious, devout (from Greek Eusebios); famously borne by Portuguese great Eusébio
The story
Eusebio comes from the Greek Eusebios, pious and devout, a name worn by early bishops and church historians, most famously Eusebius of Caesarea, who wrote the first great history of the Christian church. It settled into Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian as Eusebio and traveled wherever those languages went. Then, in the 1960s, a young man from Mozambique made it shorthand for footballing genius: Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, the Black Panther of Benfica, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1965 and scored nine goals at the 1966 World Cup, still one of the great tournament performances. In the United States the name has been a quiet presence rather than a common one, drifting along the bottom of the records for a century, with a small stir appearing in the 2020s. It remains a name of devotion that one man taught the world to cheer.
