Lukas
Meaning
German form of Luke, traditionally "man from Lucania"
The story
Lukas is the German, Scandinavian, Dutch, and Lithuanian form of Lucas. The family ultimately reaches the Greek name Loukas, traditionally understood as a person from Lucania in southern Italy. Luke, Lucas, Lukas, and related spellings then spread through Christian naming because Luke is the traditional author of a Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. The k gives Lukas a distinctly continental European shape while leaving the family easy to recognize across borders. Its US curve is almost empty for the first half of the record, begins to register in the 1960s, gathers strength from the 1980s onward, and reaches its highest displayed band in the 2010s and 2020s. That rise looks recent in America even though the form is established elsewhere. Lukas offers an international spelling without inventing a new root: an old geographic name, carried by a biblical tradition, arriving at modern American scale.
In written records since at least 1885: the 1885 Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie article serving the modern German spelling Lukas.
