Meaning

from Latin Facundus, 'eloquent'; the name of early saints and of the caudillo behind Sarmiento's 1845 classic Facundo

The story

Facundo comes from the Latin Facundus, eloquent, a name early saints carried, among them a third-century Spanish martyr. Argentina gave it its modern voice twice over. Juan Facundo Quiroga, the caudillo from La Rioja, so dominated his era that Domingo Sarmiento's 1845 book about him, titled simply Facundo, became a cornerstone of Latin American literature, the book through which a continent argued about civilization and its opposite. And the name never stopped being Argentine: Buenos Aires' civil registry placed Facundo in its top ten boys' names for the 1990s, alongside the Juanes and Matíases. Brazil's 2022 census published a total of 222. Four decade buckets appear, but smaller buckets are suppressed, so the table does not establish an exact span. The American record barely knows it. Plenty of names mean eloquent in the books; this one had a classic written about it to prove the point.
