The story
At the beginning of Facundo, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento asks a dead man to speak. He summons the terrible shadow of Juan Facundo Quiroga and demands an explanation for his country’s upheavals. It is a literary address, and a pointed way to open a book bearing a name that comes from Latin Facundus, eloquent. Writing in exile in Chile, Sarmiento published Facundo in 1845, using Quiroga’s life to argue about Argentina and attack the rule of Juan Manuel de Rosas. The historical man becomes part of a fierce political interpretation, rather than a neutral portrait. That distinction matters when a name has acquired so much literary weight. Facundo carries its older association with eloquence into a book whose opening performs an audacious act of persuasion: calling on the dead to account for the living.
