Meaning

traditionally from Latin faber, 'craftsman' (Portuguese form of the Roman Fabricius)

The story

Fabrício descends from Fabricius, the family name of Rome's proverbial honest man. Gaius Fabricius Luscinus so impressed the invading King Pyrrhus by refusing his bribes that the king released Roman prisoners without ransom; Cicero returned to him again and again as the standard of incorruptibility, and the general died so poor the state paid for his burial. The traditional etymology reads faber, craftsman, though some references hedge. Brazil adopted the name at scale: the 2022 census counted 165,799 people named Fabrício, the country's 198th most common first name, with a median age of 28; the 1970s brought 17,914 and the 1980s 46,251, more than doubling in a decade. The American record lists it only rarely. Rome carved its honest men in marble; in Brazil this one landed in the birth registers instead.
