The story
Felicity is Latin felicitas, happiness and good fortune, the virtue register at its sunniest: Hope wishes and Grace blesses, and Felicity simply says the happy word outright. The record built patiently for half a century, double and triple digits from the 1930s through the 1980s, then found its era: about 1,800 in the 1990s, the decade a college drama wore the name weekly, then 4,600 in the 2000s, 6,900 in the 2010s, and 4,200 so far this decade, closing on the full 2010s with years to run. It goes to girls almost without exception: about 18,600 to six. The word never stopped being a word, which is the register's charm: a Felicity walks around as a small daily sentence about happiness itself, and the record shows the sentence said more each decade.
