Meaning

"calm, serene"

The story

Serena comes from Latin serenus, "clear, tranquil, serene." A quiet meaning, though one of the name's vivid public scenes is full of movement. At the 2012 London Olympics, Serena Williams won the tennis singles gold with her sister Venus watching from the stands. The official account describes Serena jumping with joy; afterward, she spoke about both sisters now having a singles gold. Then they took the court together and won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon, the Olympic venue. The moment opens out from an individual victory into something shared. Serena's Latin meaning remains a matter of language, while Williams gives the name this particular sporting association: sisters who could celebrate each other's wins and also compete on the same side of the net. The doubles scene lets the relationship share the spotlight with the medal.
