The story

Flora derives from the Latin flos, "flower", and she was the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, the wife of Zephyr the west wind. Behind the Name adds two travel notes: the name has been used since the Renaissance, starting in France, and in Scotland it sometimes served as an Anglicized form of Fionnghuala. The American record is a century-long arc: about 5,440 girls in the 1890s, about 13,960 in the 1920s, then the long slide to about 720 in the 1990s, and the recent return, about 1,800 in the 2010s and about 2,510 so far this decade. Brazil's census counts about 10,800 Floras, median age thirty-five, with about 2,130 born in the 2020s already. A goddess of spring on the label, and two national records both circling back to her.
