“Italian form of the Roman Iulianus, a derivative of the family name Julius, 'belonging to Julius'”

The story

Giuliano is the Italian form of the Roman Iulianus, a derivative of the family name Julius, which the Italian references gloss as belonging to Julius. Florence gave it its most dramatic bearer: Giuliano de' Medici, brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, assassinated in the cathedral during the Pazzi conspiracy of 1478, the ambush that shook the Renaissance's first family. Cinema later added Giuliano Gemma, and architecture Giuliano da Sangallo. The surprise in the record is Brazilian: the 2022 census counted 5,692 Giulianos, and 1,975 of them, about a third, were born in the 1970s alone. The American record lists the name only rarely. A name that survived a cathedral ambush in Florence and resurfaced, five centuries later, in Brazilian birth registers.

Giuliano does not appear in US Social Security baby-name records, which list only names given to at least five babies in a year. There is no popularity curve to chart: a genuinely rare pick.
