The story
A single coin has to buy enough telephone time for a whole bedtime story. That is the wonderfully practical constraint in Gianni Rodari's Telephone Tales: Mr Bianchi, who travels for work, calls his daughter at nine each evening, and the story must fit the call. Inside that small space, Rodari finds room for streets made of chocolate. Another tale sends an old man onto a carousel to understand children's delight, then carries him above the world. Gianni itself is a short form, the Italian familiar form of Giovanni. Through Giovanni and John, it reaches a Hebrew name meaning Yahweh is gracious. Rodari gives this compact name an expansive literary association. The father in his book has distance to cross and limited time to speak; the stories make the journey during the call, with something extraordinary waiting at the other end.
