Meaning
pet form of Henry, "home ruler"
The story
Hank is what American English did to Henry, sanding a royal Germanic name meaning ruler of the estate down to one blunt, friendly syllable. It reads as pure Americana, a name for ballplayers and honky-tonk singers, and no bearer looms larger than Hank Aaron. Aaron chased Babe Ruth's home run record through the early 1970s under a storm of racist letters and death threats, broke it with home run number 715 in April 1974, and held the crown for more than three decades, carrying himself the whole way with unshakable grace. The name itself has moved in and out of style: quieter in the late twentieth century, it has been climbing again in recent years as parents rediscover the appeal of the grandfather names. The revival feels earned. Few short names arrive with a better inheritance than this one.
