Meaning

from Italy; a heritage name Italian-Brazilian families give to explicitly mark their ancestry

The story

Ítalo is the name of the idea of Italy itself: from Italus, in legend the king of the Oenotrians whom Aristotle and Thucydides name as the eponym of Italia, though the references add, with a wink, that the region may really owe its name to an Oscan word meaning land of bulls. Its greatest bearer made national identity into literature: Italo Calvino, author of Invisible Cities and If on a winter's night a traveler, was the most translated contemporary Italian writer at the time of his death in 1985. And then the name emigrated: Brazil adopted Ítalo at scale, 134,187 in the 2022 census, rank 247, median age sixteen, and handed it to Ítalo Ferreira, the surfer from Baía Formosa who won the first Olympic surfing gold in history at the Tokyo Games. The American record barely lists it. A name that means Italy, currently at its youngest and busiest in Portuguese.
