Meaning
of uncertain meaning; possibly from Classical Maya itz, "dew, nectar", or a form of Ixchel
The story
Resin, nectar and dew gather around one possible beginning for Itzel. The name may connect with the Classic Maya word itz, whose range of meanings includes resin, nectar and dew. Another proposed route leads through the Maya name Ixchel, itself sometimes interpreted as rainbow lady, from the Classic Maya elements ix, lady, and chel, rainbow. The uncertainty sits at both of those steps: Itzel may be a form of Ixchel, and the rainbow reading of Ixchel is also a proposal. These are two separate possible histories, not several meanings securely packed into the same name. Itzel’s origin remains unsettled. One possibility stays close to resin, nectar and beads of dew; the other reaches toward a rainbow through the name Ixchel.
