The story

White, fragrant sampaguita flowers are made into garlands in the Philippines. The National Museum describes those garlands as offerings to saints and ornaments in public transport. Sampaguita is Jasminum sambac, one particular jasmine species, and the country's national flower. That specific bloom gives a cultural scene to Jasmine as a name. The English flower word ultimately comes from Persian yāsamīn, itself also used as a personal name. Related forms include Spanish Jazmín, Portuguese Yasmin and Brazilian Portuguese Yasmim. The same Persian flower word stands behind these neighboring forms. Between the old word and the everyday uses of the plant, the floral meaning becomes easy to picture: white blossoms gathered into a garland, then placed as an offering or carried into an ordinary vehicle.
