Jayan
Meaning
from Sanskrit jaya, 'victory'; borne by Jayan, Malayalam cinema's pioneering action star
The story
Jayan comes from Sanskrit jaya, victory, the word the old lexicons gloss as conquest, victory, triumph. In Kerala the name means one man first: Jayan, born Krishnan Madhavan Nair in 1939, a navy man who became Malayalam cinema's first great action hero, famous for performing his own stunts through the 1970s, and dead by 1980 at the height of his fame. The screen name given to him on a film set is glossed on the record, fittingly, as The Victor. The name stays close to home: Brazil's census found 49 Jayans, the American record essentially none, and the references list the form as South Indian before anything else. A one-word meaning, a one-man legend, and a name that is still mostly Kerala's to give.
Popularity, 1890–2024
Jayan does not appear in US Social Security baby-name records, which list only names given to at least five babies in a year. There is no popularity curve to chart: a genuinely rare pick.
