Jeffrey
The story
Jeffrey is the modern American spelling of Geoffrey, a Norman name the old sources traditionally read as a peaceful pledge. Medieval England loved Geoffrey, gave it to Chaucer, and then largely set it aside for centuries. The American revival is strikingly recent: Jeffrey barely appears in the records before the 1940s, stirred with the war generation, and then rode the postwar boom straight up, peaking in the 1960s and 1970s, when Jeff was one of the defining sounds of an American childhood. It has been easing back ever since, a slow glide rather than a fall, and still lands in a respectable middle range today. Few names show the century's shape so cleanly: scarcely used, then suddenly everywhere, then gently settling, with the friendly one-syllable Jeff doing most of the daily work all along the way.
